Can Beauty Save Our Soul (or at least our teeth?)

Happy Spring everyone! I’m going to write about beauty in a moment. First, teeth.

This morning I had my mouth cranked open and an object that looked suspiciously like a tooth was extracted from my jaw. Thank goodness it wasn’t a real tooth. (Oh yeah, we already did that.) It was the faux tooth, an implant doing all the service of a real molar. But both real and faux failed. Utterly. The second (very expensive) one in fairly short order.

And lucky you! I am not posting photos of any of this! (This is already a win for beauty!) Instead—-I’m here to take my mind off my discomfort. And—mostly to offer you a glimpse of yet-to-be-sprung Spring in Kodiak this week.

(Disclaimer. We are not yet in our full beauty here. We are in-between. Our winter white’s and brown’s have not yet erupted into Kodiak’s summer jungle-green. But—-I’ll let these images speak for themselves. )

If you listen closely, maybe you will hear the Songs and sounds the psalmists have heard as well, more than 2 thousand years ago:

5 Let the heavens praise your wonders, O Lord,

your faithfulness in the assembly of tthe holy ones!

6 For who in the skies can be compared to the Lord?

Who among the heavenly beings is like the Lord,

————————————————————

He loves whatever is just and good;
the unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth.

The Lord merely spoke,
    and the heavens were created.
He breathed the word,
and all the stars were born.
He assigned the sea its boundaries
and locked the oceans in vast reservoirs.
Let the whole world fear the Lord,
and let everyone stand in awe of him.
For when he spoke, the world began!
    It appeared at his command.

The unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth . . ..

Everywhere I go, even in not-yet spring I see it too: The unfailing love of the Lord fills the earth.

Do you know how this can set us free?

No matter what you are battling right now, take some moments to look outside your window. Watch a spider on his loom. Gaze on the tawny hills. Follow the sparrow building her nest. Bend to smell the lilies in the field.

Open the Book of Creation however you can.

Inside—that is, outside—-You’ll find beauty. You’ll find freedom.

There you’ll find the Author of Creation

loving and making all things new—-especially you.

Do you see it?
